Cognitive Performance Group (CPG) is seeking a full-time professional to join our team as an applied human factors scientist specializing in human-computer interaction (HCI) and/or user experience and interface (UX/UI) analyses and designs.
CPG’s mission is to apply science to improve and support decision-making and complex cognitive performance for individuals and teams. We do that by conducting studies and co-developing products that model, measure, train, and support decision-making and cognitive performance in complex, time-pressured, high-risk, uncertain, and dynamic operating environments. We specialize in military contexts and we solve novel problems for Warfighters with our cutting-edge techniques and scientific rigor. We are a dedicated, inter-disciplinary team of applied researchers, trainers, technologists, veterans, and military subject-matter experts who work closely and collaboratively with our partners, clients, stakeholders, and the end users we serve.
The individual selected for this position will work on an inter-disciplinary team performing applied research on and evaluations of human-machine team (HMT) performance, human computer interaction, and user experience with systems and interfaces, primarily in military force-on-force or other training and exercise events.
The ideal candidate for this position is a flexible problem-solver with 10+ years of experience conducting field-based research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) on HMTs in military or in similarly complex, dynamic settings. We will consider candidates with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience. A proven record of advocating for end users’ requirements is a must.
___________
Key Responsibilities:
•   Develop and refine quantitative and qualitative metrics to measure HMT test objective(s).
•   Develop and refine mixed methods collection tools and processes as the complexity and scale of the testing events increases.
•   Develop and refine mixed methods visualizations of HMT performance.
•   (Re-)design or (re-)organize the testing environment with stakeholders for each event.
•   Collect HMT performance data through observations, surveys, interviews, focus groups, and other methods.
•   Write test plans, daily reports, and final reports as well as support after action reviews with stakeholders at events.
Required Skills and Experience:
•    Ability to develop rapport and trust with Warfighters and other stakeholders.
•    Experience adapting industry standard HCI and/or UX/UI methods and tools.
•    Ability to contribute to products and concepts in a fast-paced, high-performing team.
•    Ability to work long hours in the field over many consecutive days.
•    Experience or willingness to lead small teams
Desirable Skills and Experience:
•    Experience in military settings
•    Experience with users teaming with semi-autonomous systems.
•    Experience with AI HMTs
•    Data visualization
___________
Education Required:
•    Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience.
•    Degree must be from an accredited institution in an applied social science discipline such as Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Science, Cognitive Engineering, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Applied Cognition, Cognitive Psychology, or Anthropology. Applicants with degrees in Computer Science or similar with deep training and experience in HCI will also be considered.
Applied Research Experience Required:
•    Ability to use the scientific method to conduct applied research using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods.
•    Comfort working with ambiguity and novel concepts in innovative and rapidly changing environments.
•    Grasp of current scientific literature in one or more domain related to human cognitive performance, ideally HMT, HCI, or UX/UI with artificial intelligence-enabled or semi-autonomous systems.
•    Strong research, analysis, and synthesis skills.
•    Exceptional problem-finding and creative problem-solving skills.
•    Functional understanding of statistics and data analysis methods and tools.
HMT, HCI, or UX/UI Experience Required:

•    Experience using an HCD approach in all stages of the product development lifecycle, especially formative and summative usability testing.
•    Demonstrated experience applying HCD principles to evaluate how humans do and can work with artificial intelligence and/or semi-autonomous systems.
•    Familiarity with industry standard HMT, HCI, or UX/UI techniques and tools.
•    A proven record of HMT, HCI, or UX/UI evaluation (e.g., task analysis, heuristic evaluations, interface analysis, scenarios and use cases).
•    Experience adapting or developing techniques and tools to stakeholder requirements.
